At first glance, the above statement may sound contradictory and even flat out silly! I mean – holidays are supposed to the most festive, most relaxing time of the year – after all holidays are meant to be the time of the year when we unwind, destress and take a break from all the grueling work that we do every single day. One would be forgiven for thinking in such a way, but the truth is almost the opposite.
For years, we have
been told that holidays are the best, most pleasant times of the year, where
one has to do nothing except enjoy life. This kind of thinking has led us to
build up our expectations so much that we almost feel disappointed when
holidays actually arrive. Plus, there is that added pressure that one has to be
always happy and look their best when holidays arrive. This all leads to what’s
being termed as the ‘holiday stress’ or the ‘holiday blues’.
Furthermore, for people
with existing mental health issues, holidays can be a nightmare due to the
external pressure of always staying happy. So, this festive season, let’s ask
another how they are doing and if there is anything that you can do to lessen
their misery. Not only will it show that you genuinely care about them, but
will also bring you happiness knowing that you saved them from a potential
nightmare.
