Healing from COVID-19

We can all agree that the past three years have not been the highlight reel of our life . But seriously, all kidding aside, this pandemic has been the worst thing that mankind has had to go through. Not only has it had an enormous impact physically on the world (by this I mean the ginormous death toll, families separated/displaced, entire job sectors being shut down), but it has also dented our mental health in a way that no other past disaster has. And let’s be honest, the scars that this disaster has given us are not going to leave us. I do not know about you but just thinking about this makes me sad and feel like we are doomed. However, we have to remember that however angry we get at this mahamari (pandemic); it will not undo the effects that this virus brought on us. Believe me, if I had the chance to go back in time and undo all the changes, I would be the first person to do so in an instant. At the risk of sounding overly pessimistic, I have to add that that is not how life wor...

Who, what, when: The Three most important questions

Who is the most important person in our life? What is the most important 'karma' or thing that we should do in our life? When is the most important time of our lives? At any given point of time, these are the three questions that can be found in almost everyone's mind. Regardless of wealth, social status, race, gender; every person consciously wanting to improve him/herself; faces these questions at one time or another during their lifetime. While the answers to these three questions may vary, all of them have a similarity to them. Below is an exquisite, yet comprehendible short story that answers these three question. Once upon a time, a king woke up with three most pressing questions on his mind. His questions were: Who is the most important person in our life? What is the most important and noble thing to do in one life? When is the most important time of our lives? Such was his desire to know the answers to the question, that he decreed that whoever could answer his q...

How holidays can be stressful for some

At first glance, the above statement may sound contradictory and even flat out silly! I mean – holidays are supposed to the most festive, most relaxing time of the year – after all holidays are meant to be the time of the year when we unwind, destress and take a break from all the grueling work that we do every single day. One would be forgiven for thinking in such a way, but the truth is almost the opposite.   For years, we have been told that holidays are the best, most pleasant times of the year, where one has to do nothing except enjoy life. This kind of thinking has led us to build up our expectations so much that we almost feel disappointed when holidays actually arrive. Plus, there is that added pressure that one has to be always happy and look their best when holidays arrive. This all leads to what’s being termed as the ‘holiday stress’ or the ‘holiday blues’.   Furthermore, for people with existing mental health issues, holidays can be a nightmare ...

Introspection and Mental Health

“The unexamined life is not worth living." – Socrates   The above words were spoken by Socrates, right before his death by drinking poison in ancient Greece. He had chosen to die instead of living the rest of his life in exile and not doing what brought out the life in him. And he was only able to find what brought out the life in him through examining himself and looking inwards. He accomplished this thorough what we now call introspection . Introspection is, in essence, the process of looking inward and describing one’s own experience. A device used by many greats throughout history, it is essentially a form of self-reflection to find meaning or a sense of purpose in life. Nowadays, we live in a world that’s constantly changing and growing. And you would think that’s a positive because any growth, ultimately, is a positive thing. But that’s where the problem lies, you see. We, as humans, are wired to resist change at all cost. We want to control the things around us, a...

Disasters: A blessing in disguise

Every tragedy is a blessing in disguise. Now, I know it may not seem like one in the beginning but in the long run, all becomes clear. Let me explain with an example. Let us take the example of the murder of George Floyd. Yes, it was brutal and shocking and horrible. Yes, it should never happen to anyone. But, in the aftermath, look what happened: massive protests that no one had ever seen before, broke out in the country. Not only blacks, but people of all color, races, communities flocked out in masses to finally put a stop to hate crimes. And because of these nationwide protests, for the first time in history, efforts are being made to change the way policing is conducted as we know it. Let me give you a more personal account to make you believe that disasters are indeed, a blessing in disguise. Around 3 years ago, I was in one hell of a country, let's call it XYZ. Now, XYZ is one of the best countries in the world, in terms of sheer beauty and cultural heritage. Not to mention ...
